They print 5000 copies of it for all of the hospitals offices as well as the clinics they operate around Wisconsin.

Show opening at Alexander House

Myself and co-star ChandraLyn opened the show at the Alexander House in Wisconsin Rapids last night. A really classy affair featuring Hors Doeuvres and 2 violinists!

The thing I loved about this show was that the work is shown in a home like environment instead of the typical gallery setting. The lighting was fantastic as well. No gloom and glare.

Very well attended too. We had a good crowd going the whole night

The show is ongoing until October 6th

Sea stacks in Oregon

Flew into San Jose yesterday morning hoping to get to Bandon in time to get a sunset shot. Looooong drive in terrible traffic. Took 4 hours to go the first 100 miles. Stayed overnite at a campground. First time camping. I thought it might get me closer to my subjects and be cheaper. Eureka California. Terrible. But I found where the migratory labor force lives while they're working in California!What is it about camping that makes people get up and use thier outdoor voices at 5:30 AM?
Dinner was a really bad chili dog......

Bandon Day 2

Got up early and did the rest of the drive liesurely. Stopped along the way and shot some gulls and beach scenes. Not bad stuff really. Got to the campsite in Langlois. Much nicer. Close to where I want to shoot. Tide is out so more sand than I thought. High tide is tomorrow at 4:30 PM. Sun won't be great then but I have to stop by and see it underwater.

Back home

Up before the sun for the flight home. Traveling with that huge backpack is challenging! What a beast!
Glad I came all in all. It took two trips to get these shots. (see my Wednesday April 8th post regarding my aborted attempt last year)
5 days in.....
Miles flown: almost 5000
Miles on rental car: 1320
Nights spent sleeping on the ground: 2
Meals eaten that will certainly decrease my lifespan: 9

And the funny part is I would do it again. The shots are going to look great matted and framed at the shows they're in and my gallery (opening in 2020)
I also hope some day the next guy that wants to use one of these images for his company calendar for free ( because "it's good exposure") reads this and realizes ... Sometimes photography is hard work. It isn't 60 hours a week in a coal mine but it isn't laying on your couch watching football either.

After much wrangling and strife and re-writes the new web site is up and operational. It's not as easy as it is made to look but it was not the hardest thing I've ever done. There is a great flow to it, it's easy to update, and it has a nice feel all around.

My previous site was a monster that was way too hard to keep going and took way too much time that I should have spent shooting, so this will be the wave of the future.

I was lucky enough to win 4th place in the YourShot Contest by American Airlines. I am in line to get a nice 3 day stay in a Caribbean Island for this one. No doubt I will spend my time shooting Seashores and seascapes and pastel colored huts and boats.

New Website!

The new site is almost done! It's been a long time but the wait will be worth it I think. I decided to go with LiveBooks, because I love what they are doing with Flash in their work. I will never have to worry about unauthorized downloads and I can udate on my own without having to worry about alot of coding and Web Design work, just dropping the right images in the right places and getting on with my life.

Aborted Mission

I left Florida yesterday morning with a "20 percent chance of rain and partly cloudy skies " forecast for Oregons coast
Woke up this morning in a driving rain. I drove to the stacks I wanted to shoot, 2 1/2 hours south of where I was, just on the off chance it might thin out or break up a bit. No luck.
I'll come back in the winter when I'm always short on things to shoot and try it again.

Am making strides toward getting a LiveBooks powered web site. I have been meaning to get out of the Dreamweaver rat race and stop spending so much time updating and linking and more time shooting. They seem to have a really high quality product that I am excited to make part of my site.

It is just too time consuming to keep a site properly updated.

Plus the chances of being right clicked and having images stolen and used fraudulently disappears with the use of Flash.

Shooting in the Alligator Farm

Spent yesterday as day two of the Alligator Farm shooting. I intend to head back at least 4 more times before I can say I have tried all the shots there. Still an outstanding place to shoot birds. Alot of Beautiful egrets in the trees. Hard to miss them. They are interacting well and building nests so there is something besides shooting them standing in the trees.

Free Art Work?

I am again asked to donate work for a calendar for a multi million dollar corporation who shall remain nameless.

Licensing these images through my licensing site at PhotoShelter.com would cost $2600. It is for 3 images in a calendar with 70,000 copies printed.

Am I crazy or does it just seem like bad business to give away work? You can bet the company doing the printing is not doing it for free, and the people at the company publishing the calendar are getting paid to do the layout, so why should I as the artist who is featured on the calendar give them my hard work for free?

I'm told it is good "exposure" so I asked to have my web site listed along with my name on the page and am flatly refused. The name of the company, their 800 number, and their web site and logo is on every page in the calendar but I can't get my name on it if I GIVE them my work for free? I'm thinking no.

Here endeth the rant.

Finishing the Show

Just finished a show of my work at the New Visions Gallery in Marshfield Wisconsin.

I wish I had some images or a movie that I could paste in here but unfortunately believe it or not I never saw the show while it was running. I was there to drop things off and there while it was still up but not no longer open to collect the images that did not sell.

Sales were good though!! Best selling venue I have had to date. New Visions offers a first class gallery and lots of foot traffic. Mary Peck runs the gallery wonderfully and was a dream to work with.

Next up is a show in Wisconsin Rapids at the Central Wisconsin Cultural Center. Hopefully things there will go just as well or better.

Photographing in West Virginia

Back from a great shoot in a small place in West Virginia, outside a town called Hilltop. Not available on the map I'm afraid, but a wonderful scene in the fall.

I waited since last year to shoot here and it paid off I think. I still cannot decide which I like best, the vertical or the horizontal, but I do like them both I know that.

Page One

My photographer Rick Eyre started doing photography when he was in grade school. He was inspired to start taking pictures after he read the book “the still hunt.” which he thought was about hunting but it was about photography. When he was 11 he declared himself a wildlife photographer. He would climb trees and take photographs of empty bird nests. When he was 16 he worked for his local newspaper taking photos of houses that were for sale. Then he worked for a local photographer assisting him at wedding and social events. But he decided he didn’t enjoy that. So he began working for an adverting photographer in Chicago. He traveled all over the U.S. he even went to Germany to shoot a Mercedes brochure. Then he stopped taking pictures for a number of years so that he could concentrate on raising a family. But he got back in to it about 10 years ago.

My favorite quotes by Rick Eyre is “Does not mean you have to go to Madagascar or Africa or around the globe either.” In this quote he is talking about that you don’t have to go far to get great pictures. I really like this quote because it’s really true I like going to the cost to just take pictures or to the water front. “I can find some of the best outdoor scenic with in an hour drive.” This quote is so true if I drive like 20 minutes from my house I can find some of my favorite places to take pictures.

The reason why I choose my photographer was because I love taking landscape pictures and I like taking pictures with good colors and that’s what his pictures are. Rick Eyres photos are filled with color and good lighting. I like his pictures because they tell me a story. Like about what’s happening or what’s going on in it.

Page Two

Rick Eyres photos are really colorful and full of life they all are very moving. His work has really good lighting. I like how most of the light is bright and there is so many colors. His photographs are all really full and they all are not busy they just are nice to look at.

His work in this picture is very colorful and the oranges, reds, and yellows are just so bright. I really like how the foreground is dark and the background is really light up and sharp. I like how the river just comes up the middle of the picture and ends strait down in the water fall.

Rick Eyre mostly takes pictures of landscapes. He takes a lot of wild life photographs too. He considered himself as a wildlife photographer when he was 11.

This piece I really like it’s called “Old Mill” its one of my favorites of his. I like the way that the trees in the back ground are all light up and in the foreground the mill and the water fall and the water wheel is all in the shade.

Shooting in Michigans Upper Peninsula

Back from a waterfall tour of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Colors were great, if not peak they were darn close. There was alot of spruce trees along the waters edge so so that robbed my images of some color. My favorite was Bond Falls just into Michigan from Wisconsin. Lots of rocks and the best color I saw all weekend. I used my Singh-Ray adjustable neutral density filter to allow long exposure times to blur the water. It was overcast and raining the majority of the time so that helped shooting the water. Direct sunlight on waterfalls is never good. The contrast is a little over the edge though so I will definately have to break out the Photomatix program and tone it down a bit, or up as the situation dictates. I'll post some as soon as they are done. I have alot of shooting to do this fall so it may be a while.

Winning at the Waupaca Fine Arts Festival

I think I am on a streak of some sort. I was honored to win the two top prizes at the Waupaca Fine Arts Festival this year. My Death Valley Sand Dunes won first place for Professional Photography and my Portland Head Rocky Shoreline won the top award for the entire show, called the "Foundry Award" which is also a purchase award!

Eagle Images at Imagekind

I got the images of Alaska's Eagles uploaded onto the Imagekind site. I have also been invited to be a featured Imagekind artist on thier web site when I feel it is a good time for me to do so. Quite the honor. Thanks Imagekind.

Imagekind is a p;lace that prints my images for sale to buyers worldwide as well as taking care of matting and framing and shipping and billing and all of the other things that are involved in the commerce of getting my images out into the marketplace. They impressed me with their use of all of the same papers and inks that I use here as well as their reach.

They encourage artists to send the largest files they can possible send so the images that print for customers are as high quality as can be made from that file. Very impressive.

I've been very busy this month completing shoots in first Alaska and now Holland.

Both have been on the list for a long time and now I have them both in the bag.

I am going to get a little video together of each for the blog and the web site but I have to get home first.

Needless to say the travel is pretty grueling but the images are worth every minute.

Portland Head Lighthouse Chosen for Permanent Collection

My photograph "Portland Head Lighthouse" was selected from the exhibited work at the Reaching New Heights Gallerys "Peace on Earth" show, to be included as part of the permanent collection at the Ministry Health Care Gallery in Weston Wisconsin. The print is 24 X 32 inches and is matted and framed in tones duplicating the rock foreground.

My photograph "Portland Head Lighthouse" won the "Award of Excellence" at the Reaching New Heights Gallery "Peace on Earth" show this year.

"GodBeam" a photo of one of the slot canyons outside Page Arizona, won the "Embodiment of Spirit" award. The show is being held at the Reaching New Heights Gallery on the atrium level of 3501 Cranberry Lane in Weston Wi.

The show includes photography, painting, and sculpture from members of the Wisconsin Visual Artists Guild, a group of artists from Wsconsin and Michigan. The show continues until March 29th.

Portland Head Lighthouse Shoot

I flew to Boston and drove from there to Maine to photograph the Portland Head Lighthouse outside Cape Elizabeth Maine. I have photographed lighthouses before and have always found them to be wonderful subjects at all times of year. This one is certainly no exception, finding the right angle was the hardest part. I photographed it under several different light levels and was so hard pressed to select a favorite that I ended up making it a whole separate group of images on my web site. This is the first time I had such difficulty picking a favorite that I decided it was just impossible. This image hangs above my fireplace in my home and is currently on display at the Reaching New Heights Gallery in Weston Wisconsin until March 15, 2007. "Whispy Water" wins Best of Show!!

I was elated to be awarded the "Best in Show" at the Wisconsin Visual Artists Guild show at the Cellar 70 show in Wausau Wisconsin in December. The image is from a shoot I did in 2005 in small Nova Scotia fishing community of Peggys Cove.

The image received 2 perfect 50 scores from Erin Narloch and Jayna Hintze, both members of the Woodson Art Museum Education Department. It was the first time in memory that perfect 50's have been given to a piece at the guild. This was my first show as a member of the Guild so that made it even better.

My Most recent Shoot, Fall in the American Northeast

In October I went out to the Northeast states and set my Garmin to go from random town to random town and used the "Avoid Highways" setting to be sure I stayed as rural as possible. I got just that, with the unit asking me to turn down roads I wouldn't have used if I had a 4 wheel drive Jeep. Some of the images were indeed breathtaking though.
